GP prescribed me a weird brand of antibiotics, is that normal?

I went in with a chest infection and the GP wrote a prescription for a generic version of amoxicillin that I've never seen before. The pharmacist said it's cheaper but the coating is different. I'm a bit nervous because I've only ever taken the brand-name ones in the past. Is this common? Will the effect be different? Just trying to understand why they switch so much.

Totally normal. Most GP surgeries are trying to save NHS money by prescribing generics unless there's a specific reason. The active drug is the same.

I had this with my paracetamol too. It works, but the taste is sometimes weird. Don't worry, it's the same medicine.

If you have a sensitivity to the coating, tell them. Otherwise, just take it with food to be safe.
